Project Background
A commercial complex in a core business district of a certain city has a total construction area of approximately 120,000 square meters, encompassing three functional areas: a shopping mall, office buildings, and an underground parking garage. The project's exterior facade features a large-area glass curtain wall (total area of 3,800 square meters). The entrances and exits of the underground parking garage and the sightseeing elevators in the office building require the use of safety laminated glass. The glass is required to possess core properties such as impact resistance, fall prevention, and sound insulation, while also meeting industry standards for fire resistance, weather resistance, and environmental protection in commercial buildings. After extensive investigation and sample testing, the project ultimately selected Foundite's EVA interlayer as the core material for the laminated glass.
Project Requirements
1. Safety Protection:
The glass breaks without sharp shards flying everywhere, and can withstand accidental impacts (such as falling objects from heights or collisions with people), avoiding secondary injuries.
2. Functionality adaptation:
The curtain wall glass must withstand outdoor wind, rain and ultraviolet radiation, the sightseeing elevator glass must have good light transmittance (light transmittance ≥90%), and the glass in the underground parking garage area must take into account both sound insulation (noise reduction ≥35dB) and fire resistance.
3. Construction compatibility:
The interlayer membrane needs to be compatible with large-size glass processing (maximum single glass size 3.2m×1.8m), and after hot pressing, there should be no bubbles or delamination, meeting the requirements for rapid on-site installation;
4. Environmental standards:
It complies with EU RoHS environmental certification, releases no formaldehyde or other harmful substances, and meets the green environmental protection requirements of commercial buildings.
Solution
Based on the project requirements, Foundite customized a high-transparency, flame-retardant EVA glass interlayer, as detailed below:
1. Product selection:
It uses a 0.76mm thick high-transparency EVA film with added flame retardant formula to balance light transmittance and fire resistance; for areas with sound insulation requirements, a double-layer EVA film composite structure (total thickness 1.52mm) is used to improve sound insulation effect.
2. Processing technology:
We collaborate with our clients' glass processing plants to provide guidance on hot pressing technology, controlling the temperature at 120-140℃ and the pressure at 0.6-0.8MPa to ensure that the EVA film adheres perfectly to the glass without any defects.
3. Customized services:
EVA film is pre-cut according to the glass size of different areas to reduce on-site processing waste and improve construction efficiency; third-party testing reports (impact resistance, fire resistance rating, environmental certification, etc.) are provided to meet project acceptance requirements.
Implementation effect
1. Safety performance meets standards:
After the project was put into use, a simulated impact test showed that the laminated glass broke with a mesh-like crack pattern, and the EVA film firmly absorbed the fragments without any splashing. It passed the local building safety inspection and acceptance.
2. Fully functional requirements:
The curtain wall glass has a light transmittance of 91% and no obvious reflection distortion; the sightseeing elevator glass has high clarity and does not affect the view; the underground parking garage area has a significant sound insulation effect, effectively blocking vehicle noise; the flame-retardant EVA film has passed GB/T 8624-2017 B1 fire protection certification, which complies with the fire protection code for commercial buildings.
3. Excellent construction and durability:
During the processing, the EVA film has a 100% forming rate with no bubbles or delamination issues, and the on-site installation efficiency is improved by 30%. After 18 months of use, the glass curtain wall shows no signs of aging or yellowing, the bonding strength between the EVA film and the glass remains stable, and there are no after-sales quality issues.
4. Customer feedback:
The project owner expressed approval of the product's safety performance, construction adaptability, and environmental standards. The second phase of the project has confirmed that our company's EVA glass interlayer will continue to be used, and we have recommended it to other commercial building projects in the same industry.
